Here are our top 10 fun facts about Grand Forks, North Dakota. more Grand Forks Was an Important Area for Native Americans Located at the confluence of the Red Lake River and Red River, the area where Grand Forks now stands was an important trading and meeting point for Native Americans for thousands of years. The University of North Dakota in Grand Forks stands on the ancestral lands of the Red Lake and Pembina Bands of the Ojibwe and Dakota Oyate Tribes. Grand Forks Was Colonized by the French French explorers named the spot "The Grand Forks" or Les Grandes Fourches. Grand Forks was an important trading post for French fur trappers as early as 1740. Alexander Griggs is known as the "Father of Grand Forks" due to his efforts toward transforming the trading post into a town. Griggs steamboat became frozen in the Red River in 1870, forcing him and his crew to camp in Grand Forks for the winter. In 1875, Griggs created the community that is now downtown Grand Forks. Grand Forks was officially incorporated into a city on February 22, 1881. The Railroads Helped Grand Forks Grow Two major railways were influential in helping Grand Forks grow. The population of Grand Forks quickly expanded after the arrival of the Great Northern Railway in 1880 and the Northern Pacific Railway in 1887. Glaciers carved out Lake Agassiz during the last Ice Age, leaving the land with minute elevation changes. Grand Forks is one of the flattest regions in the world due to glacial carving. The flat terrain around the Red River has a long history of flooding and causing damage in Grand Forks. The Red River Flood of 1997 caused massive damage that led to a city-wide evacuation and a fire that destroyed multiple historic buildings. A flood memorial obelisk stands at the site of the former Security Building, the first structure lost to the fire in 1997. The memorial shows water levels from several historic Grand Forks flooding events. In 2007, Grand Forks put a levee system in place to protect it from future flooding. The most flood-prone areas near the river have been set apart as the Greater Grand Forks Greenway. The Greenway is a beautiful green space that provides lots of recreation opportunities for residents. Grand Forks Has Several Sister Cities Grand Forks is actively involved in a sister city program that encourages economic and cultural exchanges. Grand Forks sister cities are: Ishim: Grand Fork's first sister city was Ishim, Tyumen Oblast, Russia. The relationship with Ishim began during the Cold War in 1984, but Russia ended the relationship in the late 1990s. Awano: When the relationship with Ishim ended, Grand Forks began a relationship with Awano, Japan. After exchanging students for several years, the two cities became formal sisters in 1998. The relationship between the two cities is memorialized in Sertoma Park's Japanese rock garden in Grand Fork's Sertoma Park and an American bison sculpture in an Awano public park. The relationship ended when the Japanese city of Kanuma annexed Awano. Dickinson: Grand Forks became a sister city with Dickinson, North Dakota, in 2002. Sarpsborg: Grand Forks became a sister city to Sarpsborg, Norway in 2005. This relationship was founded, in part, because many residents in Grand Forks are of Norwegian heritage. There Are Lots of Public Recreation Spaces in the City Grand Forks is home to 14 neighborhood parks, two swimming pools, 28 tennis courts, and three splash pads. There are also multiple playgrounds, picnic areas, and playing fields for baseball, softball, and soccer. In the winter months, locals can enjoy Grand Fork's 11 outdoor skating rinks and arenas. Grand Forks is also home to several golf courses, including the historic Lincoln Golf course and the 18-hole King's Walk Golf Course designed by Arnold Palmer. The water park is home to two swimming pools. The shallow wading pool is great for relaxing with young children or playing a quick game of water volleyball or basketball. The larger pool is deep enough for swimming. Kids and kids-at-heart will love the four giant water slides that twist and turn throughout the park. The slides include tunnel and open sections, landing in the swimming pools below. Children must be 42 inches tall to ride slides without a parent, and young children can enjoy the large slides with an accompanying parent. Toddlers and small children also have access to three mini slides. These short slides are easy to get to, gently sloping, and land in shallow pool areas for safety. If you have toddlers, check out the water park's new toddler-friendly water play area. This new feature includes a fun splash pad, giant raining umbrella, climbing features, and waterfalls. A large tree in the center of the shallow pool has several toddler swings on its branches. The park also has a unique teepee and mural for kids to explore. A handicap access lift was also added during the recent renovations, allowing everyone to enjoy easy access to the large pool area. Hours and Rates The Seven Clans Casino water park is open to both hotel guests and the general public. The water park is closed Monday through Thursday. Operating hours are on Friday from noon to 9 p.m., Saturday from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m., and Sunday from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. The entrance to the water park is through the hotel. Water park passes can be purchased at the hotel front desk and are valid from the time of purchase until 11 a.m. the following day. Water park passes are $20 per day per person. Those with a Red Lake Tribal ID get a discounted rate of $8 per person per day. Children three and under are free with the purchase of an adult pass. Discounted rates are available for groups of 10 or more. Other Amenities on Site In addition to its amazing water park, the Seven Clans Casino is home to several other amenities: Hotel: After a day of swimming and playing at the water park, check into one of the Seven Clans 152 recently renovated hotel rooms. Balcony, fireplace, and Jacuzzi suites are available. Arcade: The arcade is next to the water park. Kids can play air hockey, racing games, and ticket redemption games. Rock climbing wall: The Casino's all-new rock climbing wall feature was added during the recent renovation. Three climbers can enjoy the wall simultaneously. A separate fee is required to access this feature. Casino: The Seven Clans Casino is home to over 650 slot machines, video poker, video keno, and a blackjack pit. They all have books, for starters, but with reading and writing groups, hobby meetings, and a number of other programs, everyone can find something they enjoy at the library. Their candy jar is always full and kids and adults alike enjoy that feature. The OverDrive app gives readers and listeners access to digital and audio books, even from home, without ever having to go to the library when they need something fast. There are often programs running at this library, like the summer reading program for kids and currently, Spring into Reading. Families can participate in Family Book Bingo events to win free books and for National Library Workers Day in April, visitors could eat snacks based on literary works. There are always special events for National Library Week as well, including movie at the library, story time, and more. The library is located at 702 1st Street in Casselton, ND and you can visit the library Mondays from 8:30 a.m. to 7:00 p.m, Tuesday through Thursday from 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., Friday from 8:30 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. The library is closed on Saturday and Sunday and it also is closed daily from 1:00 p.m. to 2:00 p.m. Kindred Public Library This library, located in Kindred, ND at 330 Elm Street, allows online reservations for books as well as curbside pickup for those who don't want to go inside. There are even book delivery services available. The library is closed on the weekends, but open Mondays and Fridays from 10:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. and Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday from 4:00 p.m. to 6:30 p.m. The Kindred Public Library opened in 2002 with a large amount of donated books. Today, the library has grown into a true community resource complete with special events and programs. For example, on the third Saturday of the month, children from preschool through third grade can enjoy story time from 11:00 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. A snack is provided and when the weather is nice, the event is held on the grassy area outside to keep everyone safe. On the second Saturday of the month, the event called "Breakfast with a Book" takes place. This group comes together at 9:00 a.m. and talks about the book of the month, which is always provided by the library. This location also has a summer reading program and supports the free little libraries in the area, which are restocked regularly. Visitors can even trick or treat at the library when Halloween rolls around. North Dakota State University Library NDSU has a collection of libraries that gives students and other members of the community just what they need, whenever they need it. The main library supports the research and learning of the students and faculty on campus but is also open to the general public. It is located at 1201 Albrecht Boulevard in Fargo, ND. The hours for the library vary based on where you are in the school year. The fall and spring semesters are the same while the summer and winter break hours vary. Students and community members can find quiet study and workrooms in the library and it's possible to put items on reserve or request resources from other libraries. The free express delivery program is a new program that select libraries, including the library at NDSU, have been chosen to participate in. This program allows libraries to provide needed articles to each other quickly and efficiently. Libraries at NDSU also have traveling exhibits that stop through the area on occasion. In the spring of 2021, the library is going to feature an exhibit called "Black America: The Story We'll Tell." The library also currently hosts a virtual program and online exhibit from Leo Kim, a former NDSU student, and celebrated photographer. Fargo Public Library The Fargo Public library is located at 103 3rd Street in Fargo, ND, though there are other libraries in the area as well, including the Dr. James Carlson Library on 32nd Avenue. The main library is open Monday and Tuesday from 10:00 a.m. to 8:00 p.m. and Wednesday and Thursday from 10:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m. Friday it is open from 11:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m. and on Saturday, it is open from 9:00 a.m. until 6:00 p.m. The library is closed on Sundays. This location features wireless printing, which can be very handy for people who don't have printers at home. You can also get eBook and eAudiobooks through library apps in the comfort of your own home. There are adult, teen, and children programs on a regular basis. Recently, the library handed out Mystery Plant Grab Bags after a Go & Grow Houseplant Series. There were also crafts to go for adults to create things on their own at home. Teens can enjoy trivia nights and advice for stay-at-home book parties. The library also has a dial-a-story program that allows you to call the library line any time and listen to a short story, a poem, a children's story, and other collections. The stories are only 3-5 minutes long and can be accessed from any phone. French explorer Pierre Gaultier de Varennes et de La Vérendrye arrived to the Red River Valley area in 1732. He coined the term "Red River" due to its reddish-brown silt. In the early 1800s, the Red River settlement was formed on the banks of the river in what is now Manitoba. Picturesque and Serene The Red River creates most of the border between Minnesota and North Dakota. While it's one of the world's flattest landscapes, it's also known as the Red River Valley, but not in a geological sense. The Red River Valley formed thousands of years ago when a glacial lake, Lake Agassiz, melted and drained out of the valley. This slow-moving and peaceful river offers a serene and quiet backdrop for engaging in a variety of outdoor recreational activities. You may also spy wildlife along the banks of the river as you're floating down the waterway. While walking along the river's edge, you may come across fossils and other historical relics, such as bison bones. Fishing For fishing enthusiasts, there are more than 70 species of fish in the Red River. Northern pike as long as 45 inches have been discovered, along with trophy-size catfish weighing up to 30 pounds and walleye as big as 13 pounds. You can also fish for other species like muskellunge, smallmouth bass, sauger, bullhead, goldeye, and carp. Lake sturgeon once found their home here but have been eradicated due to overfishing and dams. Efforts are being made to reintroduce this species to the Red River. Discover Wildlife If you enjoy discovering new wildlife, an abundance of animals can be found here in the Red River Valley. Birds such as pheasants, various waterfowl, mourning doves, partridges, and turkeys make their home in this region. Mammals like white-tailed deer, rabbits, beavers, river otters, elk, moose, bobcats, and black bears can be found roaming through the area as well. Canoeing and Kayaking Since we're talking about the Red River, we have to mention the many opportunities for fun on the water. Get up close and personal with the river by enjoying an afternoon of canoeing or kayaking. Whether you're taking the whole family out, or you simply want to enjoy some quiet time with a loved one, these amazing venues are sure to keep you and those with you interested and entertained for hours. more Red River Zoo The Red River Zoo was founded in 1993 with a mission to connect the West Fargo community to nature and inspire people to help save endangered species. This wildlife park features many amazing animals from around the world with similar environments to the Red River Valley. Red River Zoo also specializes in the care and breeding of many of the world's most unique and unusual cold climate species. The Sichuan Takin lives in the forest and bamboo groves of Western China as well as the nearby mountain ranges. While some people think the Takin looks like a cross between a moose and a wildebeest, this animal is most closely related to sheep and goats. Pallas Cats live in dens, rock crevices, and burrows of the steppe regions of Central Asia. They are about the same size as a large house cat with a coat that varies from light gray to brown. The Chinese Red Panda is native to the mountain slopes of the eastern Himalayas of India, Nepal, and Myanmar as well as southwestern China. Though this animal is called the Red Panda, it looks much more like a large raccoon with rusty red fur and dark brown fur on its belly. Ticket prices range from free for children under two years old to $11.25 for adults. Tickets for children ages 2 - 14 are $8.75 and tickets for seniors are $10.25 each. For the aviation buff, the Fargo Air Museum is a thrilling and exciting attraction. There are three main ways to experience this historical village: stroll through Pioneer Village, take a walking tour, or view the current exhibits in the main museum. Pioneer Village consists of 36 historical buildings that were all a part of North Dakota's history. Arthur Town Hall was constructed in the early 1890s and moved to Bonanzaville in 1971. It was host to many community events, such as church services and town meetings. The blacksmith shop, which was originally located in Tower City, North Dakota, features many of its original furnishings and tools.
