Visit the Red River State Recreation Center, a 1,200-acre greenway that stretches along the Red River. Hike or bike the miles of trails that wind through the area to catch a glimpse of the wildlife, including river otters, white-tailed deer, Canadian geese, and bald eagles, that live there. Boating and fishing are allowed, and picnic tables are set up throughout the grounds. The center’s campgrounds accommodate both recreational vehicles and tents, and sanitation facilities with showers and restrooms are available during the summer.

Thanks to its proximity to an urban area, it’s easy to enjoy the outdoor activities found at the recreation center, and then take a quick stroll to the nearby restaurants and shops. A vehicle permit is required to drive on the grounds and can be purchased on-site or online through the Minnesota State Parks permit page.

East Grand Forks Heritage Village

Learn about the history of the Grands Fork area at Heritage Village. Run by the East Grand Forks Heritage Foundation, the village is a collection of 21 pioneer buildings, including a town hall, schoolhouse, home gardening station, military room, and more. Take a leisurely stroll across the grounds or request a guided tour during your visit.

Heritage Village hosts special events throughout the year. In October, kids and adults alike will enjoy the Annual Haunted Heritage Village Family Event that’s complete with hayrides, costumed characters, and treat bags. In the summer, shop for fresh produce and homemade preserves at the Wednesday afternoon farmer’s markets, and during December’s Happy Holidays event, enjoy a pancake breakfast, let the kids meet Santa, and take a sleigh ride around the village grounds.
